ABOUT US

Looking for a fun and supportive way to play flag football? The South Island Flag Football League is a gender-inclusive league welcoming women and genderqueer people. ​Our league is recreational and non-contact, making it perfect for players of all skill levels, from ages 16 to 50+. No experience? No problem! We’ll teach you the rules in a friendly and encouraging environment. ​All you need are cleats, and a love for the game—so what’s stopping you? Come join us on the field and be part of something great!​

Rules

Flag football is a non-contact sport that emphasizes agility, strategy, and teamwork. Below is an overview of the basic rules for 7v7 flag football, with specific rules to ensure fair play and safety:

  • Players on Field: Each team fields seven players at a time.

  • Halves: The game consists of two halves, each lasting 25 minutes.

  • Running Clock: The clock runs continuously except for timeouts, injuries, or other official stoppages.

  • Downs: The offense has three downs to advance the ball to the next first down marker or to score.

  • Flag Pulling: To end a play, defenders must remove the ball carrier's flag without initiating contact.

  • Touchdown: Worth 6 points.

  • Point After Touchdown (PAT): Teams can attempt a 1-point conversion from the 5-yard line or a 2-point conversion from the 10-yard line.

  • Flags: Each player wears a belt with two flags attached at the hips.

  • Attire: No padding or hard protective gear is allowed; uniforms should not have pockets or loose-fitting parts that could impede play or cause injury.

  • ​Common Infractions: Offside, illegal contact, flag guarding, and delay of game.

Gender Inclusion Policy

South Island Flag Football League (“SIFFL”) invites

  • trans people of all genders,

  • non-binary people, and

  • women

to participate in our programs and does not define those genders nor set a minimum standard of femininity. For clarity, SIFFL programs are open to all flag football players who are not cisgendered men.

Code of Conduct

This Code of Conduct applies to all South Island Flag Football League programs and on all South Island League online platforms.

Players, coaches, officials, organizers, volunteers, and anyone they invite or bring with them (hereinafter referred to as “Attendees”) commit to upholding the South Island Flag Football League ("SIFFL") values of supporting physical, mental, emotional, and cultural well-being.
